We look forward to welcoming you in the summer of 2027 to one of the most beautiful concert venues in Europe on Lake Chiemsee.

Yours, Josef Kröner
Executive Director
and the team of the Herrenchiemsee Festival

2027 marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death – for the Herrenchiemsee Festival an occasion to devote a special focus of the festival program to the great classical composer. Under the motto “I Shall Hear in Heaven”, the spotlight is on his overtures and symphonies, which have a programmatic character and also relate to our current global situation: the Third Symphony, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Sixth, the “Pastoral”, a dramaturgical breather within Beethoven’s oeuvre, so to speak, depicting a world without human intervention, a world without war and hatred. The Fifth, the “Symphony of Fate”, also fits into this selection, as this score was at times misused in history to glorify power. The Fourth Piano Concerto and the Violin Concerto complement this program congenially. The “Missa solemnis”, which Beethoven himself described as his most successful work, will close the festival as a prayer set to music for peace and love among people. Kent Nagano, patron of the Herrenchiemsee Festival, devotes three concert programs entirely to the work of Beethoven.

Alongside Beethoven’s own works, the 2027 program of the Herrenchiemsee Festival also features music by his contemporaries – sounds of an era in which many courses were set, both musically and socially. The fact that Bach’s Mass in B minor and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony were composed barely 70 years apart gives an idea of how rapid the musical developments leading up to Beethoven’s time must have been. Composers such as Salieri and Rossini, Haydn and Schubert, but also Paganini, Weber and the still very young Mendelssohn were already active and well known at that time.

Of course, early music must not be missing on Lake Chiemsee. Alongside the opening concert with the Orchester der KlangVerwaltung in the Frauenmünster, traditionally dedicated to the cantatas and instrumental works of Johann Sebastian Bach, there are musical tales of love and battle by Monteverdi and his contemporaries, performed by the ensemble “Europa Galante” with Ian Bostridge and by the outstanding Swiss vocal ensemble “Voces suaves”. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos with the Freiburger Barockorchester lead the way to a virtuoso highlight, set by “Il Giardino Armonico”, one of the most famous Baroque orchestras of our time, with a firework of Baroque instrumental music.

All in all, the Herrenchiemsee Festival 2027 traces an impressive musical development up to Beethoven’s time. And as always, humanist and European ideals play a central role – in the programming as well as in the selection of international ensembles and of the exceptional young musicians who come together in the “LGT Young Soloists”. This concept is an important part of a cross-border cultural exchange.
