The Herrenchiemsee Festival is deeply committed to the genius loci\u2014the unique character of its performance venues. For Herrenchiemsee, as one of Germany\u2019s most important cultural and historical sites, is far more than just the romantic backdrop for a world-famous royal palace. Indeed, the Chiemsee Islands are among the earliest documented settlement areas in the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Around 630, a monastic complex was established on Herrenchiemsee\u2014one of the first north of the Alps. Around 770, Duke Tassilo III had two extensive monastic complexes built: a Benedictine convent on Fraueninsel, and a new building for the existing men\u2019s monastery on Herreninsel. The names of both places still reflect this monastic tradition today.
Both monasteries made history. From Herrenchiemsee, the monks Cyril and Methodius set out to Christianize Eastern Europe. One of the first abbesses of Frauenchiemsee was Irmingard, the daughter of Louis the German; her beatification also attests to the monastery\u2019s central importance to the culture of Old Bavaria. <\/p>\n
Until the Napoleonic era, the Diocese of Chiemsee dominated the region as a religious and artistic center with a significant musical tradition. In 1676, Lorenzo Sciasca designed the island cathedral\u2014which was destroyed in 1803\u2014one of the first major Baroque churches in the Italian style north of the Alps. Ludwig II ultimately proved himself to be an environmentally conscious monarch by acquiring the island for the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1873, thereby saving the ancient tree stands from being cut down at the last minute. The site made history once again in 1948, when the Constitutional Convention met here to establish Germany\u2019s democratic legal foundation following the barbarism of the Nazi dictatorship. <\/p>\n
When the monasteries were forcibly dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization movement, the fates of the two islands took extremely different turns.
On Frauenchiemsee, one of Germany\u2019s first artists\u2019 colonies was founded in 1828. The monastery was restored to its former status and still exists today. Magnificent architectural monuments\u2014including the Carolingian gatehouse and the Romanesque cathedral\u2014bear witness to the continuity of a twelve-hundred-year-old culture.
Herrenchiemsee, on the other hand, was abandoned, destroyed, and plundered until Ludwig II acquired it for the Kingdom of Bavaria and built his \u201cVersailles of Dreams\u201d in the form of Herrenchiemsee Palace: a \u201cfortress of solitude\u201d that, according to the builder\u2019s wishes, no one but himself and his servants was to enter. <\/p>\n

A French Baroque palace situated on an island in Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. By day, a lively attraction for people from all over the world; by night, after the last steamboat has departed, a magical place of tranquility. In 1878, Ludwig II created Herrenchiemsee, his brilliantly anachronistic replica of Versailles, as the embodiment of an inherent Baroque contradiction: the royal court as a shepherd\u2019s retreat. <\/p>\n

With over 80 square kilometers of water surface and a depth of more than 70 meters, Lake Chiemsee\u2014known as the \u201cBavarian Sea\u201d\u2014is Bavaria\u2019s largest lake. Three islands define the lake: Herreninsel, home to Herrenchiemsee Palace; the monastic Fraueninsel; and the smaller Krautinsel. Settled as far back as prehistoric times, the islands bear traces of the Celts and Romans; with the Christianization of the region in the 7th and 8th centuries, Lake Chiemsee became a center of Christianity. Today, one of the lake\u2019s biggest attractions is the castle built by Ludwig II, which has been visited by people from all over the world since his death in 1886.<\/p>\n
